‘The old man and the sea’ was one of the first literary works I ever read. I was no more than 17 years old and very receptive to Hemingway’s strong prose. Direct language. Seemingly simple, but oh so deep. In the middle of real life. My love for the work of this Nobel Prize winner has never passed since, not even when I learned more about his person. I like to give him his lust for wars, bullfighting and hunting. He lived in a different time for that matter. This allowed him to enjoy it unabashedly and describe the haze of the hunter in detail. From those texts appear to us – modern city people – an incomprehensible connection with nature. ‘The old man and the sea’ is a wonderful example of this. Not in the last place because, ultimately, man must resign himself to the omnipotence and unreasonableness of larger forces.
Acrylic paint on canvas, 30 x 30 centimeters. The eyes are clearly lighter in color than the rest of the portrait. Not only to make contact with the viewer, but especially to emphasize what all those eyes have seen.
