Raising the dead in Avebury
Avebury, unlike Stonehenge, seems to have nothing to do with sun, moon or stars. The stones do not cast special shadows during the solstice. There is no other light effect in the henge either. Then why the enormous henge and stone circles? All the answers to that question are speculation. This also applies to the assumption that life and death played an important role for the early farmers who laid out the sanctuary. As an artist, I love such fantasies. It is wonderful to convert the images in my head into paintings. Especially with an abstract, somewhat primitive approach, because realistic representations make the whole thing unbelievable kitsch. Hence this cheerful bustle around stones, the living and the dead in magical Avebury.
